Damn, I Lost Money Because of Trump

"Damn, Trump’s comments wrecked my portfolio again."
"Elon Musk tweeted something ridiculous and my stock crashed."
"There was an earthquake, and the whole market panicked."
"A foreign bank collapsed, and my stocks went down with it."

If you’ve been trading stocks for a while, you’ve probably heard (or said) these phrases many times. I certainly have. But over time, I realized something: the true cause of losses is not external — it’s internal.

External variables will always exist

Trump's impulsive tweets, Musk's half-joking posts, unforeseen natural disasters, or unexpected bankruptcies — these external shocks are part of the market. And they will always be there.

But the real question is not whether the event occurred, but rather: Was I exposed in a vulnerable position when it happened? If a single news headline can wipe out my portfolio, it’s not bad luck — it’s poor positioning on my part.

“You can't eliminate uncertainty from the market, but you can choose your exposure to it.”

The real reason for my losses

It’s not Trump’s fault. It’s not Musk’s fault. It’s my fault for entering trades without a clear plan or risk management strategy.

If I entered a trade thinking, "Well, it should go up eventually," without any solid data or strategy, then any loss I incur is entirely on me. That's not investing — that’s emotional gambling.

Remove emotion, focus on structure

As I gained experience, I realized: The real danger is not the news itself — it’s being unprepared for the news.

Predicting events is impossible. What matters is having a system that absorbs shocks without blowing up. If you trust your strategy, you might get shaken temporarily, but over the long term, your expected value remains positive.

So I always remind myself:

“News is just an excuse. A poor position without a plan is the real risk.”

Conclusion

Next time the market tanks because of a shocking tweet or unexpected crisis, ask yourself:

"Did I have any fault in my positioning?"

Only through this reflection can you grow as a trader. The real threat isn't what happens outside — it’s the gaps in your preparation.

Just like a balloon won’t pop unless it’s already overstretched, the question isn’t who poked you — it's whether you were overinflated to begin with.
